Tesla Model 3 And Model Y To Be Checked For Sudden Loss Of Steering

The US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a preliminary investigation into Tesla following complaints of steering and power steering problems from owners of the company’s electric vehicles. According to available data, the problem may affect 280,000 Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles in 2023.

NHTSA has published data on 12 complaints from owners of new Tesla car models. The claims relate to the loss of steering control: the car gave the driver information that the power steering was lowered or turned off. Five people reported being unable to drive an electric car, and one accident was also recorded.

In a Tesla Model 3 complaint filed on May 7, the complainant stated that his car crashed after the car’s steering “jammed”, causing the car to slip off the road and crash into a tree, Forbes USA noted. Other complaints are about problems with the power steering, due to which drivers had to make great efforts to control the steering wheel. NHTSA will determine if these security issues are a safety concern during a preliminary investigation. After that, the department can conduct an engineering analysis, and subsequently recall the cars.

The NHTSA preliminary investigation is the first step towards launching a formal investigation, in which the regulator must determine how serious the new Tesla electric vehicle problem is. To do this, department specialists will have to conduct a more detailed analysis of the current situation in order to establish the causes of control problems in Model 3 and Model Y.
