YouTube Wants to Disable Videos for Those Who Use Ad Blockers

Google continues to crack down on ad blocking on Youtube. Previously, the company tested a pop-up with a blocker warning and a choice to allow ads or purchase Youtube Premium. Now we are talking about an experiment with limiting the number of videos viewed to three if the blocker is re-enabled.

A pop-up notice alerting viewers to this explains that YouTube will block the ability to view videos on the platform unless they turn off the ad blocker or add the website to their whitelist. The notice also notes that ads keep YouTube free for billions of users around the world. To avoid ads, the company encourages users to subscribe to YouTube Premium.

Previously, YouTube only showed pop-ups to users of ad blockers, reminding them that doing so was against the website’s Terms of Service. Now, video hosting is taking a more aggressive approach to force viewers to disable ad blockers or subscribe to YouTube Premium.

At the moment, the experiment is only affecting a small number of users, and YouTube did not say how many people and regions are participating in the test. However, if this test proves effective, we can expect YouTube to roll it out to more users around the world.
