Chinese Startup Says Its New EV Battery Doesn’t Lose Range In The Cold

Chinese electric vehicle battery start-up Greater Bay Technology, a subsidiary of Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC), said it has a solution to one of the biggest disadvantages of electric vehicle batteries, loss of range in cold weather. Its Phoenix battery line is equipped with technology that does not succumb to low temperatures.

Huang Xiangdong, the company’s co-founder and president, says the company’s new Phoenix cell uses superconducting materials and thermal management to heat from -20C to 25C in just five minutes, allowing the battery to charge “in all weather conditions in six minutes.” “The Phoenix battery not only addresses the long charging time of electric vehicles, it also addresses other issues,” Huang said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a hot day or a cold day, the Phoenix battery’s range will not be affected.”

The new technology has been a huge breakthrough in the world of electric vehicles, as thermal inefficiency and reduced range in cold weather have been a major concern for electric vehicle manufacturers. Electric vehicles can lose up to 35% of their range in freezing temperatures.
