PC Shipments In the Last Quarter of 2022 Fell By 28%

Global PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2022 amounted to 65.3 million units, which is 28.5% lower than in 2021, follows from the Gartner report. This is the biggest quarterly drop in shipments since the research company’s observations began in the mid-1990s. IDC provides similar data.

For the whole of 2022, PC shipments fell by 16.2% compared to a year ago, about 286.2 million units. According to Gartner expert Mikako Kitagawa, the expectation of a global recession, accelerating inflation and rising key rates in the world have had a serious impact on computer sales.

The expectation of a global recession, rising inflation and higher interest rates have had a major impact on PC demand,” said Mikako Kitagawa. “Consumer demand has dropped to its lowest level in years,” he said, as many users have fairly new PCs purchased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Computer sales in the fourth quarter of 2022 declined for all manufacturers. The worst performers were Acer and Dell, which recorded a decline of 41.2% and 37%, respectively. The least severe decline (by 10.2%) took place at Apple. Lenovo, which remains in first place in the supply of personal computers, in October-December 2022 reduced their supply by almost 29%. This recession was the strongest for all time of supervision of Gartner for the market, the research notes. Shipments of Lenovo-branded desktops and laptops fell in all regions except Japan. In EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) and Latin America, sales decreased by 30%.
