Two People Accused Of Hacking Into Ring’s Security Cameras For Livestream

According to the Los Angeles grand jury indictment, two people were charged. The defendants made 12 false emergency calls and broadcast the police response live on social media in November 2020. The couple gained access to 12 Ring home security cameras in nine states by hacking Yahoo!  email accounts.

The suspects were later identified as Kaia Christian Nelson (21) and James Thomas Andrew McCarthy (20). Nelson, originally from Racine, Wisconsin, is currently in a Kentucky jail on a separate case. McCarthy is a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina who was living in Kayent, Arizona at the time of the alleged crime.

Nelson and McCarthy gained access to security cameras across the country, primarily in the two California cities of Oxnard and West Covina.

Both men are charged with one count of conspiracy to intentionally access computers without permission. Nelson was also charged with two counts of knowingly accessing a computer without permission and two counts of aggravated identity theft. If found guilty, both men face a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Nelson faces an additional maximum sentence of at least seven years on the remaining counts.
