Meta And Qualcomm Agree To Jointly Develop Chips For VR Devices

Meta has signed an agreement with Arm-processor developer Qualcomm to create special custom chipsets designed for the next generation of Quest series VR headsets. The companies announced this at the IFA exhibition in Berlin.

Specialists from both companies will work together on a project to create future chipsets based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR platform. According to Reuters, the agreement demonstrates Meta’s dependence on Qualcomm even as the company is developing its own solutions for virtual, augmented and mixed reality devices.

The chips produced under the collaboration will not be exclusive to Meta, but will be optimized for the Quest system, Meta spokesman Tyler Yee told Reuters.

According to him, the agreement applies only to virtual reality devices.

Meta has relied on Qualcomm chips for years for its VR devices, including its latest Quest2 headset, which, according to IDC, has about 90% of the VR hardware market.

The company is also investing heavily in augmented reality glasses as it tries to make Metaverse CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of a metaverse a reality.
